Alternatively, ‘ensemble’ methods or ‘super learners’ that combine the results of different regression and prediction methods84 could be used. However, it is not clear that such methods will pick out functional or causal variants in an association study involving a large number of variants or collapsed sets of variants over those that may, due to LD, merely act as strong predictors of the phenotype.
