Eleven SNPs spanning 83 kilobases (kb) upstream of the MANEA promoter to downstream of the MANEA 3′ UTR were selected from the National Center for Biotechnology Information database or by the Applied Biosystems SNPbrowser, version 3.5 (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, California). Characteristics of each SNP are presented in Table 2. The average intermarker distance is 8295 base pairs (bp) for all SNPs, but only 5600 bp for the 7 SNPs in the promoter and coding regions. Most SNPs were genotyped with a fluorogenic 5′ nuclease assay method, ie, the TaqMan technique,27 using the Applied Biosystems PRISM 7900 Sequence Detection System. One SNP (SNP 8) was genotyped in the family sample at the Center for Inherited Disease Research as part of the Illumina Linkage IVb Marker Panel (http://www.cidr.jhmi.edu).
