Remarkably, the temporal span of the effective spike transmission between pyramidal cell-interneuron pairs is comparable to the activity lifetime of the principal cells in both hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (Fig. 4), implying that synaptic plasticity may play a role in limiting the duration of cell assemblies by controlling their temporal and spatial evolution.
