In contrast, the association between the onset of alcohol use and cigarette smoking among 17 to 25 year-olds was attributable to common genetic factors. The relatively limited research in this area (in which initiation is measured as “lifetime use”) has produced mixed findings. The degree to which onset of alcohol, cigarette and cannabis use is attributable to common genetic or environmental factors is unclear.
