Within our sample of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum, bipolar, and depressive disorders we found drug/alcohol use at hospitalization was not associated with study completion, χ2(1) = .72, N = 801, p = .400, failure to complete any follow-up assessments, χ2(1) = .06, N = 801, p = .804, failure to complete the final follow-up assessment, χ2(1) = .01, N = 801, p = .945, or number of follow-up assessments completed (r = −.02, p = .664). Participants provided written informed consent, and this research was reviewed annually by each university’s Institutional Review Board.
