front-end amplifier to be located within the pixel itself, as the electrode alone exhibits a high impedance and therefore cannot drive the multiplexed readout lines at sufficient speed. Inherently, the available area within the pixels is limited in high-density arrays, making it difficult to build very low noise amplifiers. In addition, the electrodes themselves and the activity within the culture medium show wide band noise (see Section Noise and SNR), thus requiring a low-pass filter within the pixel to prevent noise from being aliased into the signal band due to the sampling. Generally full-frame readout arrays have a high channel count, and therefore the power budget per channel is very limited.
