As reviewed above, emotion regulation deficits accounted for the increased rates of internalizing symptoms among LGB adolescents relative to their heterosexual peers (Hatzenbuehler, McLaughlin, & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2008), indicating the importance of adopting a developmental perspective in understanding these mental health disparities.
