The fact that the AA, P, HAD1, HAD2 and sP rat lines display different levels of an ADE under particular conditions and for different periods of time, indicates that these rat lines can serve as animal models for assessing compounds targeting relapse-like ethanol drinking behavior (e.g., Colombo et al., 2003; Gilpin et al., 2003, 2008b). Also, see the discussion on the operant ADE and its pharmacological manipulation as a measure of relapse behavior described below.
