Text

Willingness to participate in genetic research. After informing participants of ongoing genetic studies of anxiety disorders and/or major depression at the research site, the group moderators explicitly asked group members whether they would be willing to volunteer to participate in such studies. All of the participants indicated their willingness by allowing focus group research staff to give their phone numbers to the administrative staff (of the genetic studies) who would then contact them and have them go through a separate consenting process for the studies. Most participants indicated that they had never participated in genetic studies because they were not aware that these studies were going on. When asked about the preferred method of getting to know about the studies, the primary response was through word of mouth.
