Text

Information on alcohol use at age 18½ was available for 3,100 participants, and all but 109 of these had provided at least one earlier measure of depressive symptoms. Among the sample of 3,100 there was little evidence of an association between harmful use and gender with 8.8 % of males and 7.4 % of females classified as drinking at a harmful level (χ 2 = 2.0, p = 0.153). The pattern was similar when restricting the sample to those with 2 or more depressive symptom measures (8.1 % of males, 7.1 % of females, χ 2 = 0.84, p = 0.360).
