Heavy episodic drinking denoted participants who drank the day of the interview or up to 48 hours prior to the interview and who typically consumed 5 or more drinks (4 or more for women) on the day they drank (versus those using less and not prior to the interview). Alcohol problems were measured with the Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule–Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) Version (AUDADIS-IV), which assesses use of alcohol, and DSM-IV diagnoses of alcohol abuse and dependence [17]. Respondents who met the criteria for alcohol abuse and/or dependence were classified as having an AP. Prevalence rates of alcohol use prior to the interview and heavy episodic drinking were estimated. Table 1 shows the demographic characteristics of NVDRS suicide decedents and NESARC participants used in the analysis.
