Chunk #41 — Discussion — Widespread Associations of Small Magnitude between Cigarette Pack-Years and Measures of Brain Structure

Source
Genetic and environmental contributions to the relationships between brain structure and average lifetime cigarette use.

Text

Significant correlations of pack-years and brain structure were due to both significant shared genetic and environmental influences shared between the two, indicating multiple pathways by which the brain processes the demands related to smoking. Therefore, different patterns of genetic and environmental influences between specific regions and pack-years are expected to highlight different networks in the brain related to smoking etiology.
