As a set, our results call into the question the assumption that the quality of later romantic relationships “matters” to the same degree for all individuals. Indeed, our results suggest that the present takes on a different meaning in light of the past. For those who experienced low quality early caregiving, anxious-depressed symptom levels differed drastically as a function of their young adult romantic quality. However, anxious-depressed symptom levels for those who experienced high quality early caregiving did not vary as much as a function of their adult romantic relationship quality.
