Reaction times to enter the second-step port were faster following common than rare transitions (p = 2.8 × 10−8, paired t test) (Figure 1F). However, in our task (unlike the original), the motor action associated with a given second-step state is fixed, and hence second-step reaction time differences may reflect preparatory activity at the motor level and so may not provide strong evidence about subjects’ decision strategy.
