The next step evaluated the proportionality assumption for each of the covariates to determine whether the covariate effects were identical across all time points. Proportionality was assessed separately for each covariate by comparing a model with time-varying covariate effects to a model that constrained the covariate effects to equality across time. If the unconstrained covariate model fit better than the constrained model (based on LRTs), the covariate violated the proportionality assumption.
