The results presented here should be interpreted with some limitations in mind. First, by using the SRE questionnaire we were not able to address the “differentiator model” (Newlin & Thomson, 1990). That is, it has been proposed that some individuals at high-risk for alcohol-related problems are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol during the ascending limb of intoxication (characterized primarily by stimulation and euphoria) and less sensitive during the descending limb (characterized primarily by sedation). Support for this model has been mixed (see Morean & Corbin, 2008), so future studies may want to address this model directly. Second, by using moderated mediation models and including genes, level of response to alcohol, parental monitoring, and four covariates, we did not have the statistical power to examine sex differences. However, in order to address the fact that males typically have greater body mass and therefore require more drinks to feel the effects of alcohol, we statistically controlled for sex and BMI. It will be important for future work to examine the role of biological sex as a potential moderator. Third, given
