A systematic literature search revealed 18 studies eligible for inclusion [13, 14, 19, 20, 44–46, 50–60], entailing a total of 462 AUD patients and 416 healthy controls. The flow of information through the different phases of the review is depicted in Fig. 1. The main reason for exclusion refers to investigations of WM in AUD with other measures than DTI or VBM, for example, connectivity analysis (e.g., [61]) or WM signal hyperintensity analysis (e.g., [62]). Other common reasons for exclusion were region of interest analyses (e.g., [63–65]) and studies investigating subclinical samples not meeting AUD diagnosis criteria (e.g., [66]). Information about demographic and clinical sample characteristics from the included studies are presented in Table 1.
