negative feedback loop that inhibits further hormone secretion and HPA axis activity to return homeostasis (DeRijk et al. 2008). Polymorphisms in NR3C1 have been associated with glucocorticoid resistance and reduced HPA axis negative feedback (DeRijk et al. 2008), as well as a variety of behavioral phenotypes including adolescent alcohol abuse (Desrivieres et al. 2011). Evidence also suggests that individual differences in glucocorticoid signaling are associated with differential response to intervention. For instance, the evaluation of an intervention aiming to reduce disruptive behaviors reported that children with low cortisol stress reactivity to experimental challenge responded less favorably than children with high cortisol stress reactivity (van de Wiel et al. 2004).
