Lack of ancestral and global diversity remains a significant concern for GWAS, with 86% of studies conducted in participants of European ancestry.34 Our study included data from 163,611 cases and 1,001,890 controls of non-European diverse ancestries. Unlike most other multi-ancestry GWAS, we used a joint analysis approach and did not exclude individuals with mixed ancestry or ancestry not represented in reference sets. This is becoming ever more important as the number of people with mixed ancestry is increasing in countries such as the USA and the UK.35 Overall, the additional ancestrally diverse participants helped identify 100 novel genetic associations and enabled us to demonstrate significant genetic risk prediction across diverse ancestry groups.
