in effective parenting behaviors such as parental monitoring (Amato & Keith, 1991), which is consistently linked with offspring alcohol use behaviors (Jackson & Schulenberg, 2013) likely via increased access to alcohol. In contrast, offspring may use alcohol to cope with distress associated with parental relationship discord (Kuntsche et al., 2005). Thus, because of potential differential mechanisms underlying the associations between parental divorce/relationship discord and offspring alcohol outcomes, separate models were run.
