To further explore gender in relation to subtypes, additional analyses were performed on the Babor study data using the statistical techniques mentioned earlier (Del Boca and Hesselbrock 1995). Although the two-cluster solution subtypes (i.e., type A-type B) effectively represented the study sample in terms of risk and severity, new groups were derived to explore whether meaningful, gender-related subtypes would emerge. Using the new analysis, researchers discovered that dividing the sample into four clusters also produced a functional solution. Differences between the men and women in the new typology were most evident in two of the groups. Table 2 presents profiles of the four new subtypes suggested by this analysis.
