Abstinent and non-abstinent relatives were significantly older than relatives with persistent AUD (both p<.01). Non-abstinent remitters had a larger proportion of females than the persistent AUD group (p=.03). Abstinent relatives had more lifetime AUD symptoms and non-abstinent relatives had fewer than did relatives with persistent AUD (both p<.001). Compared to relatives with persistent AUD, abstainers had higher rates of professional treatment (p=.03) and self-help attendance (p<.001) and non-abstinent relatives had lower rates of professional treatment (p<.01). Both remitted groups had a higher lifetime prevalence of major depressive disorder than the persistent AUD group (both p<.01).
