Hypothesis 3 predicted that both SRE5-LR and impulsivity would have direct as well as partially mediated relationships with later alcohol problems. To determine whether the two key Baseline measures operated similarly in the SEM, we evaluated each using the same intermediate (Time 2) variables and similar hypothesized pathways to ALC PROBS in the hypothesized model. In Figure 3, this approach revealed potentially important differences in the significant paths for SRE5-LR and impulsivity where, contrary to our prediction, only SRE5-LR related directly to ALC PROBS, and only the effect of LR was partially mediated by perceived peer drinking (PEER).
