GABRA2 variants also have been found to moderate treatment outcomes. Specifically, rs279858 was associated with drinking in individuals assigned to different psychotherapeutic treatments [114]. Although in that study there were no appreciable differences across treatment type (12-step vs. cognitive behavioral vs. motivational enhancement therapy), individuals homozygous for the low-risk A allele, had fewer drinking days when enrolled in 12-step treatment. In another study, carriers of the same risk allele relapsed to drinking earlier than A-allele homozygotes [115].
