Impulsivity is one of the most intensely studied components of diminished inhibitory control where high impulsivity can be observed early in life and relates to multiple adverse outcomes, including AUDs and other substance use disorders (SUDs) (Kendler et al., 2003; Meyers et al., 2014; Salvatore et al., 2015; Sher et al., 2005; Wardell et al., 2015). Gene-by-environment interactions have been identified for this concept, including how peer substance use patterns moderate the impact on heavy drinking of genes contributing to impulsivity (e.g., Salvatore et al., 2015).
