in individuals of African descent and has not been found to be associated with MaxDrinks in AA samples; however, another functional variant rs2066207 with similar functional effects associated with AD diagnostic traits in AA samples (Edenberg et al., 2006). Gene-based studies have reported an association between rs671 at ALDH2 and reduced MaxDrinks in Asian populations, but not in EAs or AAs, where this variant is uninformative. Our recent GWAS in a relatively isolated Chinese population confirmed this locus on ALDH2 for MaxDrinks that explained 22.9% of the phenotypic variation in our sample (Quillen et al., 2014).
