Text

Among individuals who reported daily smoking (n=506), several measures of more advanced smoking behaviors were examined in this analysis that focused on the period of heaviest smoking. Time to first cigarette after waking was derived from the question “During this period when you were smoking the most, about how many minutes after you woke up did you smoke your first cigarette?” and the 4 response options: more than one hour, 31–60 minutes, 6–30 minutes, and within 5 minutes. For the analyses, time to first cigarette was dichotomized into >5 minutes (n= 338, 67%) and ≤5 minutes after waking (n=168, 33%). Cigarettes per day was evaluated with the question “During the period of time when you were smoking the most, about how many cigarettes did you usually have per day?” and the 4 response options: 10 or fewer, 11–20, 21–30, and 31 or more cigarettes. Cigarettes per day was dichotomized into ≤20 (n=367, 74%) and >20 cigarettes (n=131, 26%) in the analyses as done in previous studies (Belsky et al., 2013; Broms et al., 2006).
