Table 4 shows the number of students who reported a perceived family history of relatives having a drinking problem, a problem with other drugs, or problems with depression or anxiety, as well as differences in rates of alcohol use and problems as a function of family history. Students who reported a family history (as indexed by any relative type) of alcohol or other drug problems, or problems with depression/anxiety, all showed elevated rates of having initiated alcohol use. Having a mother with perceived alcohol problems was also associated with a significantly higher frequency/quantity of alcohol use, although trends were in the expected direction (with higher rates of use) among those with any positive family history, despite the results not reaching statistical significance. In addition, a positive family history of any kind was associated with significantly increased rates of alcohol dependence symptoms.
