It is noteworthy that our method did not appear to detect other observational associations thought to reflect causal relationships. For example, there have been associations reported between BMI and coronary heart disease [25], and BMI and hypertension [26]. Table 2 implies that the most probable explanation for this failure is statistical power in that 2000 cases and 3000 controls is unlikely to provide sufficient power to detect weaker causal relationships between biological intermediates and disease.
