Instead, we found that neural signatures of laterality invert after the saccade (Figures 4 and 5), ruling out a retinotopic reference frame for WM (Figure S6C, left column). Our results are consistent with the remembered location’s being maintained within a spatiotopic reference frame at the cognitive level (Ong et al., 2009) but within a retinotopic reference frame at the neural level (Figure S6C, upper right quadrant).
