Text

The G protein-coupled mu opioid receptor (encoded by the OPRM1 gene) affects signal transduction pathways that mediate the effects of opioids and plays an important role in opioid reward, tolerance, analgesia and dependence. The vulnerability to develop opioid addiction is partially inherited and individual differences in opioid effects may be attributed to genetic variations. Understanding the effects of this variability is of clinical importance.
