Individuals may have been misclassified into having had no stressful life events when it is plausible that they could have experienced a stressor(s) not addressed in the NESARC survey. Finally, some stressful life events addressed in the NESARC survey directly overlap with DSM-5 criteria for SUDs. Thus, the data are not entirely independent. However, exploratory analyses removing the five stressful life event items that overlap with DSM-5 criteria did not substantively change the pattern of results.
