Although patient and control group were closely matched for gender, the unbalanced cell size in combination with the limited sample size prevented the investigation of sex differences. Olfactory function appears to be enhanced in women compared to men, as indicated by nasal chemosensory and OERP measures, and different aspects of olfactory processing in males and females may be differently affected by age (e.g., Olofsson & Nordin, 2004; Stuck et al., 2006). Thus, only with substantially larger samples may it be possible to address the impact of gender (and age).
