While the reason underlying the impact of sex on early-life stress is unknown, there are baseline differences in the expression of epigenetic regulators between the sexes (Auger et al., 2011; Nugent et al., 2015). Differences in the levels of epigenetic regulators at baseline or differences in circulating hormones between the sexes could contribute to these discrepancies; however, more work is needed to fully understand the differential impact of stress on the sexes.
