The Affect Grid (Russell et al., 1989) is a 9×9 grid with affect descriptors in each corner. Participants check the appropriate cell of the grid that represents current emotions. The affect grid results in separate valence (pleasantness vs. unpleasantness) and arousal (high arousal vs. low arousal) ratings, and has good inter-rater reliability (0.98 for valence and 0.97 for arousal) and convergent validity (with the Positive and Negative Affect Scale; PANAS; Russell et al., 1989).
