At this stage, it is unclear to what extent these same loci influence fat distribution in other ethnic groups, such as South Asians, in which patterns of fat distribution, and the relationships between fat distribution and metabolic disturbance, differ from those in Europeans. The data are consistent with a model whereby fat mass and distribution are determined through the concerted action of processes acting at the level of both the hypothalamus and peripheral fat depots.
