Several studies have examined the behavioral effects of pharmacological manipulation of KORs using models of ethanol-conditioned reward and aversion. In these models, experimenter-administered ethanol is given either before confinement to one side of a multi-compartment chamber (for assessment of conditioned place preference; see Cunningham et al., 2006) or after consumption of a novel tastant (for assessment of conditioned taste avoidance; see Davis and Riley, 2010). As shown in Table 1, results from these studies have been somewhat inconsistent, with numerous experimental variables likely contributing to the discrepant findings.
