It has reciprocal associations with family support, divorce, occupational attainment, and job involvement (Roberts et al. 2003, Roberts & Bogg 2004). Conscientiousness is hypothesized to influence depression by increasing exposure to negative life events (Anderson & McLean 1997, Compas et al. 2004), but mediation and moderation effects have not been tested.
