Direct comparisons of the FTND and DSM based measures show that the former is more strongly related to the prediction of smoking heaviness and relapse vulnerability. For instance, the FTND shows stronger relations with both self-report and biochemical measures of smoking heaviness than do DSM-type measures (e.g., [9, 91]), and shows stronger relations with cessation likelihood (e.g., [22, 28]).
