criteria 5 years later (Schuckit et al. 2001). A clinical study of 175 patients in treatment for alcohol abuse or dependence found that 43% of participants were abstinent 4 weeks after beginning out-patient treatment for AUD (Charney et al. 2010). In a population-based sample using two waves of data from the NESARC, 37% of 4781 individuals with alcohol dependence were remitted 10 years after its onset, and the cumulative probability of remission over the lifetime was 91% (Lopez-Quintero et al. 2011). The remission rate of 40% in the current sample is therefore a reasonable estimate consistent with findings in a variety of samples.
