regions found to correlate with alcohol craving in alcohol dependent patients, but not in social drinkers (Myrick et al., 2004). Other studies have supported the positive association between activation of the dorsal striatum and cue-induced craving in alcohol dependent patients (Wrase et al., 2002) and implicated the magnitude of activation in these brain regions with the risk for relapse (Grusser et al., 2004). While these studies have demonstrated that alcohol versus control cues elicit differential brain activation in alcohol dependent patients as compared to controls (Schacht et al., in press), less is known about individual variation within alcohol dependent individuals.
