were initially uncertain which rule set was now in place and so had to pay attention to the feedback information to guide subsequent behaviour. This differs from previous studies which have manipulated the choice demands (O'Doherty, Critchley, Deichmann and Dolan, 2003; Tricomi, Delgado and Fiez, 2004). In the other two conditions (GENERATE or CONTROL), whatever response was made was always followed by correct feedback meaning that participants need not monitor the outcome information in order to work out what rule set to use.
