Mutational screening of the CART gene in obese children has identified a mutation (Leu34Phe) associated with reduced resting energy expenditure and obesity phenotype [19]. A recent study shows that a small group of adolescents with the Leu34Phe mutation in the CART gene exhibit higher anxiety and depression scores than control subjects and develop severe early-onset obesity [20]. Results suggest a possible relationship between prevalence of obesity and severity of mental disorders, in which CART may play a unique role [21].
