Text

The main analytic sample was limited to the 4,068 participants with a DSM-IV diagnoses of alcohol dependence. We compared 3,138 COGA participants who met criteria for AUD and did not attempt suicide in their lifetime with 930 participants with AUD who attempted suicide. Table 1 presents the demographic characteristics. Overall, those with AUD who attempted suicide were more likely to be female (53% vs. 32%). Rates of suicide attempt and the age distribution of participants were similar across EUR-like and AFR-like groups (see Table S2 for stratified results). The majority (58.4%) of the analytic sample endorsed suicidal ideation at some point in their lifetime; of those who attempted suicide, 97.6% endorsed prior suicidal ideation compared to 46.8% of those who did not attempt suicide.
