to the meta-analysis and the replication sample (Supplementary Table 1), suggesting that these variants represent robust associations with depression. Our gene-based analyses revealed pathways relating to neurotransmission and response to stimuli, with the central nervous system also found to be enriched when performing heritability partitioning. The partitioning of the heritability for depression also highlighted the importance of the cortical regions of the brain and further research focussed on the regions and biological pathways detected is warranted. We detected 269 genes putatively associated with depression and demonstrated the utility of investigating their interaction with pharmacological treatments.
