Substance abuse or dependence results in impairments of executive function such as decision making, forethought and impulse control, and subsequently increases an individual’s propensity to participate in criminal acts (Anthony and Forman, 2003). Moreover, the onset of a SUD makes the individual more prone to polysubstance use (Newcomb et al., 2001; Ellickson et al., 2004). Polysubstance abuse is associated with impulse control problems (Cunningham, 2004), selling drugs, and other crimes (Nurco, 1998).
