living in disadvantaged neighborhoods, we also anticipated that low SES and neighborhood factors would account for the link between childhood trauma and alcohol use initiation to an even greater extent for childhood trauma defined more broadly to include events such as witnessing violence, compared to interpersonal trauma specifically. Building on recent work indicating that neighborhood disadvantage is associated with elevated risk for heavy drinking in Black adults but lower levels of alcohol use in White adults [28], we also explored potential differences by race in the association of low SES and neighborhood factors with alcohol use initiation.
