in which cannabis use could be a “cause” of psychosis[19]. The strongest form of causal link is that heavy cannabis use causes a psychosis that would not otherwise have occurred. A second hypothesis is that cannabis use is a contributory cause: it might precipitate psychosis in vulnerable individuals - that it is one factor among many (including genetic predisposition and other unknown causes) that act together to cause psychotic disorders.
