Building on this framework, we do emphasize the relationship between the reasons for not seeking treatment and AUDs severity [17, 24, 25]. We hypothesized that at low levels of AUDs severity a lack of problem awareness is the predominant reason not to seek treatment. As AUDs severity increases, denial becomes more difficult and individuals are more likely to consider treatment and to face actual barriers associated with the treatment seeking process.
