Therefore, brevity and accuracy in detecting SUDs are critical considerations for adoption, as seen in the Health Information Technology for Economic & Clinical Health Act and the PPACA, which encourage the development and meaningful use of EHR to improve patient care (i.e., collections of standardized, patient-reported health indicators or common data elements) (Ghitza et al., 2011b; National Institutes of Health, 2011). Common data elements should include validated or standardized items, with brevity as a primary consideration (e.g., use of a minimal number of screening questions, combining screening items for alcohol and drugs) (Ghitza et al., 2011b).
